LEI code — globally unique 20-character identifier mandatory for RBI-regulated entities, corporate borrowers above Rs.5 crore, and OTC derivatives participants.
The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a globally unique 20-character alphanumeric code issued to legal entities engaging in financial transactions under the ISO 17442 standard administered by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made LEI mandatory for corporate borrowers with total exposure above Rs.5 crore, OTC derivatives participants, participants in the government securities and money markets, and entities making large-value cross-border transactions.
In India, LEI codes are issued by Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL), a subsidiary of CCIL — the authorised Local Operating Unit. LEI registration requires annual renewal to remain active — an expired LEI is considered invalid for regulatory reporting. MFiling manages both new LEI applications and annual renewals for corporate clients.
LEIL fee: Rs.4,900 (new) + Rs.4,900 (annual renewal). Processing time: 5–7 working days. MFiling professional charges: from Rs.2,999 inclusive of application and LEIL portal management.
