FSSAI Basic Registration for food businesses with turnover below Rs.12 lakhs — home bakers, tiffin services, street vendors, and small eateries.

5.0 / 5.0

Overview

FSSAI Basic Registration is mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) with annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs who handle food as part of their business. This includes home-based food businesses (home bakers, tiffin services, cloud kitchens), petty retailers, street food vendors, small eateries, and cottage food manufacturers. FSSAI is the statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that regulates all aspects of food safety in India under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The 14-digit FSSAI registration number must be displayed on all food product labels, packaging materials, and prominently at the business premises. Operating a food business without FSSAI registration can attract penalties up to Rs.5 lakhs plus imprisonment. MFiling files FSSAI Basic Registration applications on the FoSCoS portal and typically obtains the certificate within 7–10 working days.

Government fee: Rs.100/year. Validity: 1–5 years (applicant's choice). MFiling professional charges: from Rs.1,499.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FSSAI registration required for selling homemade food on Instagram or WhatsApp?
Yes. Any person selling food products — regardless of platform (social media, WhatsApp, or doorstep delivery) — is a food business operator and must obtain FSSAI registration. The FSSAI registration number must appear on product packaging, labels, and promotional material. Home-based sellers with turnover below Rs.12 lakhs apply for Basic Registration.
What is the difference between FSSAI registration and FSSAI licence?
Basic Registration (Form A) applies to petty food businesses with turnover below Rs.12 lakhs. State Licence (Form B) applies to medium-sized businesses between Rs.12 lakhs and Rs.20 crore. Central Licence applies to large businesses, importers, and multi-state operators. Regulatory requirements, fees, and penalties increase as the authorisation level increases.
