Overview

GSTR-9 is the Annual Return that every regular GST taxpayer with aggregate annual turnover above Rs.2 crore must file, consolidating all outward supplies, inward supplies, ITC availed, tax paid, and adjustments for the financial year (April to March). It reconciles the data declared in all monthly/quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings and identifies discrepancies, missed ITC, or excess claims.

Taxpayers with annual turnover above Rs.5 crore must additionally file GSTR-9C — a reconciliation statement certified by a Chartered Accountant or Cost Accountant, comparing GSTR-9 with audited financial statements. The due date for both is December 31st of the year following the financial year. Late fee: Rs.200/day up to 0.25% of annual state turnover.

MFiling prepares GSTR-9 with comprehensive reconciliation of all 12 months of GSTR-1/3B filings against books of accounts. MFiling professional charges: from Rs.4,999 for GSTR-9; from Rs.8,999 for GSTR-9 + GSTR-9C combined.

Detects RCM Liabilities Not Captured
Annual reconciliation catches RCM (Reverse Charge Mechanism) liabilities missed in monthly GSTR-3B filings.
GSTR-9C Satisfies GST Audit Requirement
CA-certified GSTR-9C fulfils the statutory reconciliation requirement for Rs.5 crore+ turnover businesses.
Avoids Rs.200/Day Late Fee

How it Works

Collate All Monthly Return Data (Week 1)

Compile GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data for all 12 months of the financial year.

Reconcile with Books of Accounts (Week 1–2)

Compare GST return-reported turnover with audited revenue — identify differences and causes.

Identify Missed or Excess ITC (Week 2)

Compare ITC claimed in GSTR-3B vs. available in GSTR-2B — identify missed ITC and excess claims.

Verify RCM and Exempt Supply Declarations (Week 2)

Check that all RCM liabilities and exempt/nil-rated supplies are correctly declared.

Prepare GSTR-9 Draft (Week 3)

Fill all tables in GSTR-9 — Table 4 (outward), Table 6 (ITC), Table 9 (tax paid), Table 15 (refunds).

Review and Finalize with Client (Week 3)

Present reconciliation findings and GSTR-9 draft to client for approval before submission.

File GSTR-9 (and GSTR-9C if applicable) (By December 31)

Submit on GST portal by December 31 deadline — GSTR-9C requires CA certification before filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GSTR-9 filing mandatory for taxpayers below Rs.2 crore turnover?
GSTR-9 is mandatory for regular taxpayers with annual aggregate turnover above Rs.2 crore. Taxpayers below Rs.2 crore are exempt from GSTR-9 filing. Composition Scheme dealers file the separate GSTR-4 annual return by April 30. However, even for taxpayers below Rs.2 crore, voluntary GSTR-9 filing is recommended to ensure all annual reconciliations are completed and any missed ITC is recovered within the allowed time limit.
Can missed ITC from previous financial years be claimed in GSTR-9?
Yes. ITC that was available in GSTR-2B for a financial year but was not claimed in the monthly GSTR-3B returns can be claimed in GSTR-9 for that year, subject to the time limit of November 30 of the following financial year (the due date for September GSTR-3B). For example, missed ITC for FY 2023-24 can be claimed in GSTR-9 for FY 2023-24 if the return is filed within the due date. ITC reversal amounts found in GSTR-9 must be paid in cash with interest.
