Obtain your GSTIN (15-digit GST number) — mandatory for businesses above Rs.40L (goods) or Rs.20L (services) turnover, all e-commerce sellers, and inter-state suppliers.
GST registration is the process by which a business enrolls on the GST portal and obtains a unique 15-digit GSTIN. Registration is mandatory for businesses with aggregate annual turnover exceeding Rs.40 lakhs for goods suppliers and Rs.20 lakhs for service providers (Rs.20L and Rs.10L respectively for special category states). Certain categories must register regardless of turnover — all e-commerce operators and marketplace sellers, businesses making inter-state supplies, and businesses required to pay under Reverse Charge Mechanism.
GST replaced VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and CST with a unified destination-based tax from July 1, 2017. A valid GSTIN enables a business to collect GST, claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on purchases, and operate seamlessly across all states. Without registration, the business cannot charge GST, cannot claim ITC, and cannot supply to GST-registered B2B buyers who need a vendor GSTIN for their own ITC claims.
